Information on two-component methyl methacrylate (MMA) adhesives

A two-component methyl methacrylate adhesive, or two-component MMA adhesive for short, is a two-part acrylate-based reactive adhesive. It consists of two components that are mixed before or during application and subsequently cure through a chemical reaction.

“2K” stands for “two-component.” The adhesive consists of two separate components, usually a resin and an activator or hardener. The curing process begins only when the components are mixed.

Two-component MMA adhesives are suitable for high-strength yet tough and flexible bonds. They are commonly used in vehicle manufacturing, metal construction, plastics fabrication, mechanical engineering, boat building, rail vehicle construction, composite components, and industrial assembly.

Depending on the product, MMA adhesives can be used to bond metals, aluminium, steel, stainless steel, GRP, CFRP, ABS, PVC, acrylic glass, polycarbonate, many engineering plastics, painted surfaces, wood, ceramic, and composite materials. Adhesion to PE, PP, PTFE, silicone, and very soft plastics is generally difficult and should be tested in advance.

Yes, two-component MMA adhesives often achieve very high strength. At the same time, many products remain tough and flexible, allowing them to absorb impacts, vibrations, and dynamic loads more effectively than highly brittle adhesive systems.

Two-component MMA adhesive cures through a chemical reaction between the two components. It does not require atmospheric moisture and can also cure between non-porous, non-absorbent materials.
