Information on two-component polyurethane adhesives
A two-component polyurethane adhesive, or two-component PU adhesive for short, is a polyurethane-based reactive adhesive. It consists of two separate components, usually a resin and a hardener, which are mixed before or during application. After mixing, the adhesive cures through a chemical reaction and forms a permanent bond.
Two-component polyurethane adhesives are suitable for strong, durable bonds that can range from flexible to rigid, depending on the product. They are commonly used in vehicle manufacturing, mechanical engineering, timber construction, furniture manufacturing, metal construction, plastics fabrication, sandwich panel production, construction, and industrial manufacturing.
Depending on the product, materials such as wood, metal, aluminium, steel, stainless steel, plastics, GRP, CFRP, concrete, stone, ceramic, glass, rigid foam, insulation materials, rubber, leather, textiles, painted surfaces, and composite materials can be bonded. Adhesion to PE, PP, PTFE, silicone, or highly plasticised plastics is generally difficult and should be tested in advance.
One-component polyurethane adhesives generally cure through moisture in the air or in the materials being bonded. Two-component polyurethane adhesives cure through a reaction between the two components. This allows them to cure more reliably between non-porous materials, in thicker layers, and in controlled industrial processes.
A two-component polyurethane adhesive is particularly suitable when controlled curing, high strength, good gap-filling properties, or specific flexibility is required. It is also suitable for applications in which a one-component system would cure too slowly or insufficiently reliably.
