Information on Technical Sprays – Primers

Technical primer sprays are adhesion promoters used to prepare surfaces before bonding, coating, or painting. Depending on the product, they improve wetting and adhesion on smooth materials or surfaces that are difficult to bond.

Primer sprays are used to improve the adhesion of adhesives, adhesive tapes, sealants, paints, or coatings. Typical applications can be found in industry, trades, automotive engineering, plastics processing, assembly, advertising, and repair.

Depending on the product, primer sprays are suitable for materials such as plastic, metal, glass, rubber, painted surfaces, ceramics, or composite materials. Particularly on difficult-to-bond substrates, such as certain plastics, a suitable primer can significantly improve bonding performance.

A primer can activate the surface and improve the bond between the substrate and the adhesive. This can make the bond stronger, more uniform, and more durable. Pretreatment is often recommended, particularly for critical surfaces, low-surface-energy materials, or applications with high durability requirements.

Before application, the surface should be clean, dry, and free from dust and grease. The primer spray should be applied thinly and evenly and then allowed sufficient time to flash off or dry. The adhesive, adhesive tape, or coating should only be applied afterwards.

Important factors include the substrate, the adhesive or coating system being used, the desired improvement in adhesion, and the required resistance to temperature, moisture, UV radiation, and chemicals. The application instructions and flash-off times specified for the respective product should also be observed.
